UK Court Rules in Shell’s Favor over Nigerian Villagers

Sunday, January 29, 2017

Shell saw a UK high court rule in its favor when it came to determining if the multinational could be sued in Britain for claims against subsidiaries abroad. The ruling prevents villagers from Nigeria from suing Shell in the UK over oil spills in the West African country.

Villagers in Nigeria’s Niger Delta have claimed they have been affected by pollution and had sought recompense from Shell in London rather than its subsidiary in Nigeria.

The law firm representing the villagers says it will appeal the ruling.
