Nearly 1,800 UN peacekeepers have joined African troops in the Central African Republican (CAR) with the UN formally taking control over the regional peacekeeping mission in the country, nine months after sectarian violence erupted leaving 5,000 people dead with thousands fleeing for refuge. African forces already total around 6,200 troops in addition to the 2,000 French soldiers deployed in December.
“The switch from AU to UN peacekeepers must be more than a cosmetic change: the swapping green berets for blue helmets. Instead it must serve as a fresh start for the peacekeeping operation in CAR,” said Steve Cockburn, Amnesty International’s campaigns deputy regional director for West and Central Africa.
The new muscle coming in hail from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Morocco, and Bangladesh. Thirteen peacekeeping missions have been deployed to CAR in 20 years, although none have helped broker lasting stability.
