Wellhead to Burn for Weeks on Nigeria’s OML 95

Thursday, May 21, 2020

According to Nigeria’s National Oil Spill Detection & Response Agency (NOSDRA), the well head of the Ororo-1 on OML 95 operated by Guarantee Petroleum Co Ltd. caught fire on May 16. The company has engaged Haliburton and Chevron Nigeria Limited to assist it in extinguishing the fire. NOSDRA says it will take at least six weeks to extinguish the inferno on the Grace-1 hydraulic workover rig.

A Joint Investigation was carried out on Sunday because of the nature of this emergency situation, NOSDRA reported. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries from the explosion.

Chevron itself battled a similar fire outbreak on well head last year and it took it eight weeks to extinguish the fire through an indirect well.

It is actually unclear who holds license to the Ororo OML 95 operation as Sirius Petroleum and Guarantee Petroleum have both at times held operator status. Sirius has been negotiating with the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) since May 2019 and Guarantee’s license was revoked last month by DPR but the company was already well into its workover operation when the DPR letter came on Apr 7.
