Chad Suspends CNPC’s Operations

Thursday, August 15, 2013

CNPC’s operations in Chad have been brought to a halt by the government, as it suspended the company from working due to environmental damages it has allegedly caused. Djerassem Le Bemadjiel, Chad’s oil minister, told the BBC and other outlest that CNPC was at fault for an oil spill in several sites near a forest.

He said the situation was “intolerable”  but did not make it clear how long the suspension would last.

In another report filed by AFP, Le Bemadjiel visited Koudalwa, where the Chinese firm is exploring. “It’s a very serious situation, it’s intolerable,” Le Bemadjiel said, adding that such violations were a crime.

The minister said that the Chinese exploration unit had dug huge trenches and let oil flow into them, and then had it removed by local workers without protective gear.

Managers at the company would be held responsible for the violations, he told AFP.
