Ghana Pays Sinopec for Gas Project

Monday, July 29, 2013

In Ghana the government has paid $188 million to Sinopec for the continuation of work on the gas infrastructure development project at Atuabo in the Western Region. The payment means that work on the project can recommence after stalling for two months.

Ghana National Gas Co. (GNGC) Managing Director Dr. Sipa Yankey said that the government had not initially been able to pay Sinopec’s invoices because of “challenges” with the $3 billion CDB loan facility. Yankey went on to tell reporters that GNGC processed another disbursement invoice for $120 million to settle the total amount it owed the contractors.

“Two major facilities for processing of natural gas to feed the Aboadze Thermal Plant and an LPG facility have been installed following the resumption of work, while the hooking-up of pipes is also being carried out.” He added that the sub-contractor constructing the offshore pipelines, who had abandoned the site earlier in the year due to lack of payment, would arrive in Ghana this week to resume work.
