Mugabe Named AU Head

Friday, January 30, 2015

The African Union (AU), at its summit in Ethiopia’s capital of Addis Ababa, named Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe as chairman. This move that is sure to rile a number of Western nation’s as well as some of Africa’s own citizens.

Mugabe has been in charge of Zimbabwe since it achieved independence from the UK in 1980. At age 90, Mugabe is both revered and hated in his own country, depending on who you ask.

During his acceptance speech Mugabe said that Africa needed to guard against foreigners exploiting the continent’s mineral wealth and called for more assistance for African farmers. Zimbabwe at one time was one of Africa’s breadbaskets, providing not just enough food for its own citizens, but exported it as well.
