Niger Plans Pipeline to Benin

Thursday, July 20, 2017

Niger plans to export its oil via a pipeline that will link its oil fields to the port of Cotonou in Benin. Foumakoye Gado, the Nigerien minister in charge of petroleum, made a working visit to Cotonou from where he met several Beninese officials in charge of the sector.

The visit to Benin was aimed at Gado acquainting himself with Benin’s infrastructure, economic, security, environmental and commercial assets.

Dona Jean-Claude Houssou, Benin’s Minister of Energy said that Benin is the natural port of Niger and that the tradition of cooperation that has always existed between the two countries should be preserved. He then reassured the Nigerien side that his country is ready to offer all the facilities for this project to move forward.

If the pipeline moves forward, not only will it benefit the economy of Benin, but will allow for Niger to ramp up its production. Currently all of Niger’s production is processed at its sole refinery.
