Nigerdock Participates in Local Content Milestone

Friday, September 23, 2011

Nigeria’s oil service industry has hit a milestone, for the first time a semi-submersible drillship will see maintenance and an upgrade in the country. The Transocean GSF Rig 140 arrived in Nigeria to undergo a planned 80-day maintenance and upgrade at Snake Island, Lagos. Historically the rig would have been sent to another location such as South Africa or Dubai for the upgrade.

The servicing of this rig is seen as a major achievement to the Nigerian government’s local content policy. The work is being handled by Niger Dock and over 120,000 Nigerian man-hours will be required, involving 180 Nigerians from a combination of Transocean, Nigerdock, and other sub-contractors.

The scheduled overhaul and upgrade to the rig’s operational systems will be undertaken including the derrick; the top drive, the crown block and the travelling block systems. Some piping systems will be replaced, coating operations performed and an upgrade will be undertaken of the closed circuit television (CCTV) system.

“Our driver is largely based on in-country capacity building and developing local competencies and capabilities which are aligned with the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act of 2010,” Gabriel Oramasionwu, managing director, Transocean’s Gulf of Guinea Division was quoted as saying in a BusinessDay article.
