Statoil Strikes Out Offshore Angola

Friday, September 5, 2014

Statoil completed its first well on Angola’s Block 39, unfortunately for the company the well, the Dilolo-1, was not a success. Block 39 is in the Kwanza Basin and the well was drilled to test the block’s pre-salt potential.

While the Dilolo-1 was not successful in encountering hydrocarbons, the companny did say it provided a valuable calibration for other prospects in the area. Further studies are needed in order to fully understand the well results. The well is now in the process of being plugged and abandoned.

The Stena Carron drillship, used to drill the Dilolo-1, will now be moved to Block 38 to spud the exploration well Jacaré-1. The Angolan pre-salt is a frontier play where Statoil will participate in eight commitment wells across five blocks.

Statoil is also participating in two more wells in the Kwanza basin in Angola, the Puma on the Total-operated Block 25 and the Locosso well on Block 22 operated by Repsol.
