Upcoming Tanzania Presidential Elections Heat Up

Sunday, August 30, 2015

On the run-up to October 25 presidential elections, the country’s political parties are heating up their campaigns. The ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party launched its campaign with a huge rally in Dar es Salaam, with its candidate former works minister John Magufuli running on a platform that he says will put a stop to rampant corruption. Not only is the CCM campaign taking to the streets, but also by email with Petroleum Africa staff being notified to vote Magufuli.

President Jakaya Kikwete, who will have served the two-term maximum, is stepping down as required and backing the CCM candidate. The CCM has been in power for the most part since 1964.

The country’s main opposition parties have combined to back Edward Lowassa, ex-prime minister, who defected from the CCM in July after losing the party nomination to Mapinduzi. With Lowassa’s CCM background and his former party now plagued with scandal because of alleged graft and corruption, and weakened by internal splits, analysts believe Lowassa could be a serious threat to the status quo and holds a reasonable chance of taking the vote. Lowassa’s campaign was set to kick off beginning August 29.
