211 Blocks Open in Nigeria

According to the latest data from Nigeria’s Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), the more than 50% of its exploration blocks have not yet been allocated. DPR data suggests that out of the 390 oil blocks delineated in the country, 211 are not allocated.

As of the end of 2017 the government had allocated 179 blocks, 111 OMLs and 68 OPLs. In the oil-rich Niger Delta, 34 out of 187 blocks are unallocated; in the Anambra Basin 12 out of 19 are idle, 39 out of 50 in Benin are idle; 41 of 43 in the Benue are unallocated; 17 out of 17 in the Bida are still open; 40 out of 46 are open in the Chad; and all 28 of the Sokoto’s blocks are open.
