Thursday, April 12, 2018

Tragedy struck Algeria when a military plane crashed in a field near the capital of Algiers. According to witnesses, the plane’s wing caught fire shortly after taking off, and crashed a short time later.

The latest reported death toll according to state run media is 257, with most of them being military, the Ministry of Defense was cited as saying in an APS report. Also included in the 257 dead were 26 members of the Polisario Front, an Algerian-backed group fighting for the independence of neighboring Western Sahara, a territory also claimed by Morocco in a long-running dispute.

Ten crew and other people described the scene as family members died, and a number of survivors were being treated at an army hospital, the ministry added.

A source close to Polisario said that the dead included four refugee children and that around 30 refugees who had received medical treatment in the capital had been killed in all, according to a Reuters report.
