29 Dead in Mogadishu Hotel Attack

Monday, October 30, 2017

A 12-hour siege at a Mogadishu hotel ended in 29 dead on October 29. The siege was a result of one of the deadly attacks carried out over the past few weeks in Somalia.

Mogadishu saw twin bombings two weeks ago that left more than 350 people dead.

The Islamist militants al Shabaab claimed responsibility for this most recent attack that started on October 28. The government responded by sacking two of the country’s top security officials.

“So far I am sure 29 people died – the death toll may rise,” Abdullahi Nur, a police officer, told Reuters. At least 12 of the dead were police officers, Nur said. And a woman, MadobeNunow, was beheaded while her “three children were shot dead,” he said.

Security forces captured three militants alive and two others blew themselves up after they were shot according to police. Some militants may have disguised themselves and escaped with the residents who were rescued from the hotel, one police officer said
