ADI VP to Run for President in Sao Tome

Wednesday, May 25, 2016

Evaristo Carvalho, the VP of Sao Tome’s parliamentary ruling ADI party, is throwing his hat into the presidential ring. Carvalho will be a candidate for president in the island nation’s July elections, according to his spokesman Domingo Boa Morte.

This year’s elections will be Carvalho’s second attempt at the presidency after narrowly losing out to president Manuel Pinto da Costa in a run-off in 2011.

It is unclear as to whether the incumbent da Costa will run for a second term, but so far Carvalho’s competition is former prime minister Maria da Neves.
