BRICS Business Forum: Africa Development Bank

and South African Chamber of Commerce hold side event on attracting private sector investment into Africa”

July 25, 2018

Venue: The Capital Empire Hotel

Johannesburg, South Africa

Time: 9am to 1pm

The African Development Bank in collaboration with the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry will hold a panel discussion on the Africa Investment Forum (AIF) at the BRICS Business Forum, which is a key multilateral business engagement. This side event, taking place on July 25, 2018 at the Capital Empire Hotel in Johannesburg, South Africa,  is a forerunner to the first-ever AIF, Africa’s investment marketplace for accelerated economic transformation, which will take place in Johannesburg on November 7-9, 2018.

Africa has huge infrastructure deficit. This year’s African Economic Outlook, a flagship report by the African Development Bank, estimates that Africa would need between US $130 billion and US $170 billion to meet its infrastructure needs. Total commitments were at just US$63 billion, as at 2016. This represents a financing gap of approximately US$ 67 to US$107 billion a year, in just infrastructure.

To address Africa’s investment challenge and to unleash its potential, the African Development Bank and its partners are championing AIF, which will be held annually. AIF’s goal is to harmonise processes between the African Development Bank and its partners, to reduce intermediation costs, to improve quality of project information and documentation, and to increase action-oriented engagements between African governments and the private sector.

During the event, participants will have the opportunity to understand their roles in maximizing Africa’s potential, learn the deal process of AIF and network with other stakeholders.

Deputy Director General of the Southern Africa Region at the African Development Bank Group, Josephine Ngure, will be speaking at the event’s closing ceremony to share more details on the AIF with the media.

Individual interview sessions would be organized upon request.
