African Energy Resources obtained approval from Botswana’s Environmental Affairs Department to increase the capacity of the Sese coal power plant to 500 MW.
According to initial forecasts, the infrastructure should have had a capacity of 300 MW. In addition to the capacity of the infrastructure, the approval obtained also stipulates that the project must be completed in two years.
The facility will be associated with the region’s coal mine operated by Canadian First Quantum Minerals, which will provide the fuel for energy production. Half of the production will also be used for the operation of the mine.
The company also approached Botswana Energy Regulatory for a license to generate and export energy. It intends to export the surplus of its production to Zambia where the First Quantum Minerals holds other mines.
