The 2016 Summer Olympic Games came to an end on August 21 with the closing ceremonies taking place that evening. While the US team garnered the most medals in the games, a number of African countries performed admirabley and will be bringing a host of medals back to the continent.
Of the countries from Africa making it to the podium, Kenya garnered the most medals, actually making it into the top 20 medal winners. The East African country is going home with 13 medals; six gold, six silver, and one bronze. Kenya’s wins came from the track and field events, closing the games with a gold medal finish in the Men’s Marathon.
South Africa was next on the list, coming in with 10 medals; two gold, six silver, and two bronze. The country’s gold medals, as well as two of its silver medals, came from Track and Field events. South Africa’s four other silver medals were won in swimming and rowing, with three and one respectively. Its two bronze medals came from the Triathlon and Rugby Sevens.
Coming in with the third most medals is Ethiopia with eight; one gold, two silver, and five bronze. The country’s medals all came from Track and Field events, including a silver medal in the Men’s Marathon. Next in the medal count is Egypt and Tunisia, both with three bronze medals. Egypt won its medals in weightlifting and taekwondo. Tunisia won its medals in taekwondo, wrestling, and weightlifting. Cote d’Ivoire won two medals, a gold and a bronze, both in taekwondo. Algeria scored two silver medals in Track and Field events, while Niger scored a silver in taekwondo, and Burundi took a silver in the women’s 800 meter.
Morocco and Nigeria round out the list of African countries who are bringing Olympic medals home. Morocco won a bronze in boxing and Nigeria’s football team won its country the bronze in soccer.
