In Somalia, government troops and African Union peacekeepers killed 24 people during fighting between with Al Shabaab fighters. Reports out of the country have it that Al Shabaab fighters ambushed a convoy carrying troops from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) early on July 30 in the Bulamareer district of the Lower Shabelle region, according to Colonel Hassan Mohamed speaking to Reuters
Ali Nur, the deputy governor of Lower Shabelle region, said: “We have carried 23 dead AMISOM soldiers and a dead Somali soldier from the scene where Al Shabaab ambushed AMISOM.”
While government officials have the death toll at 24, al Shabaab is claiming the number to be more than a dozen higher at 39 dead AU soldiers. Al Shabaab said that one of the dead was an AU commander.
