Al Thinni Government Bombs Airport in Tripoli

Friday, March 20, 2015

The internationally recognized Libyan government of Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni in Benghazi attacked the only airport functioning in Libya’s capital of Tripoli. According to government officials warplanes attacked the Matiga airport, a military base used for commercial flights. Libya’s other airport in Tripoli was closed in mid-2014 following heavy fighting that damaged runways.

The bombing at Matiga is just another incidence of the tit-for-tat attacks that have been going on between the rival governments and parliaments. The Matiga attack took place just days after the Tripoli government reportedly attacked a local airport in Zintan.

“Fighting jets conducted air strikes on Matiga airport early today which damaged the runway,” said airport spokesman Abdulsalam Buamoud. No one was hurt.

Mohamed El Hejazi, a spokesman of forces allied to Thinni, claimed responsibility for the attack. “The strike is part of a war against terrorism that will continue until Libya has been freed of terrorism,” he said.
