Algeria Cracks Down on Importers and Banking Officials

Monday, June 8, 2015

More than a dozen importers and bank officials in Algeria have been arrested as the government cracks down on corruption and tightens control on imports. According to reports, 17 have been arrested to date – 10 importers and four state and private bank officials.

Algerian security services are also working with Interpol for the arrest of those wanted in connection with this activity abroad, state radio reported.

Those arrested and others are accused of illegally transferring €26 million and $5 million and planning to transfer €124 million, state radio said. Imports were enabled by bank officials who provided loans.

“They inflated import bills. Their goal was to set up a smelting works plant with equipment that does not meet standards,” a judicial source was cited by Reuters as saying.
