An arrest warrant has been issued in Algeria for the country’s former energy and mining minister Chakib Khelil. According to reports Khelil is wanted for corruption charges related to activities with the Algerian state-run firm Sonatrach.
The Algerian state news agency APS reported that in addition to Khelil, the Algerian justice department has also launched international warrants for the arrests of eight persons linked to the case including Khelil’s wife, his two children, and Farid Bedjaoui, a nephew of the ex-foreign minister.
The arrest warrant follows an investigation into reports of bribes in connection with oil and gas contracts in the North African country.
Khelil was also president of Algerian oil group Sonatrach, while Farid Bedjaoui is presented by the Algerian and Italian media as playing the role of intermediate in the payment of bribes to Italian group Saipem in order to be granted oil contracts in Algeria.
Algeria isn’t the only one investigating Bedjaoui’s role in the bribery case, Italian prosecutors would also like to talk to Bedjaoui and have issued an international arrest warrant for him.
