Algeria to Host Elections on July 4

Monday, April 15, 2019

Algeria said it will host presidential election on July 4, according to the interim presidency. No further details were offered.

The setting of the date for elections follows the interim president, Abdelkader Bensalah, stating that he would organize free elections within 90 days.

Algeria’s army chief said he expected to see members of the ruling elite face prosecution for corruption. He also said that he would support a transition toward elections.

“The army will meet the people’s demands,” said Salah, addressing officers and soldiers at a military base. “The judiciary has recovered its prerogative and can work freely.”
