Algerian Discovery Tops OAPEC List

Members of the Organization of Arab Exporting Countries (OAPEC) saw 44 new discoveries made over 2013. Of the 44 discoveries 34 were new oil discoveries and 10 were natural gas discoveries.

According to the group’s monthly report the most prominent of the oil discoveries made came out of Algeria. The report said the Algerian discovery was made in Hassi Messaoud and contained an estimated 1.3 billion barrels of crude. At the time the discovery was made energy minister Youcef Yousfi said the discovery was one of the most important in the last 20 years.

On the natural gas end the Al-Shimal field in Qatar, with an estimated 71 Bcm of natural gas, was the highlight of gas discoveries.
