Algeria’s Shale Dreams Face Protests

Thursday, January 8, 2015

Algeria’s hopes for establishing a shale gas industry are being dashed by protests in the country’s sparsely populated south over the government’s shale plans have erupted and are spreading according to the state news agency. The North African country has the third-largest estimated shale gas reserves in the world, but the ability to take advantage of them may be dashed if the protests continue.

While Algeria has seen initial success at a site near In Salah, residents began protests fearing the environmental impacts from drilling. The local governor was unable to calm their fears and protesters have demanded to see the prime minister.

The demonstrations spread January 6 to Tamanrasset, where 2,000 people protested in front of city hall, urging that the project be halted. They carried banners reading “Do not endanger our environment and groundwater.” Police monitored the protests, with helicopters flying overhead.

A delegation of ministers will be sent to reassure people, an official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.
