During the World Petroleum Congress that took place in Moscow last week, Angola held a ministerial session where officials announced that new offshore blocks will be put up for auction in 2015. Oil minister Jose Botelho de Vasconcelos told attendees that it will offer deep and ultra-deep water blocks that contain both pre and post-salt targets as the country looks to increase its daily output to over 2.0 million bpd.
Describing the potential of the blocks, Resource Evaluation Manager for state-owned Sonanagol, Lumen Sebastiao, said the blocks are located off the southern portion of its coastline; specifically the Namibe Basin near Namibia and the southern portion of the Kwanza basin. The blocks are thought to contain pre-salt reserves.
According to Sebastiao, significant geologic work has already been conducted on the blocks including 2D and 3D seismic. The blocks coming up for auction include 46, 47, 48, 49, and 50 in the Lower Congo Basin. In the Namibe Basin, Blocks 11, 12, 13, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 42, 43, 44, and 45 feature.
The country has seen success on its pre-salt targets with six discoveries out of eight wells drilled. Currently, Cobalt is drilling another pre-salt target.
Angola is also assessing three onshore basins for possible block tenders.
