Angola Supreme Court Launches Inquiry into Sonangol Chief’s Appointment

Monday, October 31, 2016

Jose Eduardo dos Santos, president of Angola, is facing an inquiry into his appointment of his daughter as the head of state-run oil and gas firm Sonangol. As per reports, the president’s appointment of his daughter, Isabel dos Santos, has triggered an inquiry from the country’s Supreme Court.

The court was acting in response to a case filed by more than a dozen Angolan lawyers who have accused the president of nepotism and violation of the Angolan probity law. The appointment is seen by some as nepotism at its finest and a way for President dos Santos to lay the ground work for family succession if, and when, he follows through on his intention to step down in 2018.
