Angola will see a new president in 2018 as Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who has ruled the country for 37 years, will not be running for re-election in the 2018 polls. Joao Lourenco, the defense minister and vice president of the ruling MPLA party, will be the candidate for the ruling MPLA party.
Under the constitutional changes dos Santos put into place the president is no longer elected by the people, but rather by the National Assembly; in principle, the party holding the majority of seats selects the president.
The MPLA rules both the parliament and the National Assembly which has enabled dos Santos to stay ensconced as Angola’s president. The next parliamentary elections are to be held in 2017 and it is expected that the MPLA will continue its reign in the National Assembly.
