The AU’s Peace and Security Council announced that it will cease to recognize Yahya Jammeh as the legitimate president of Gambia as of January 19. The date marks the day Jammeh is supposed to hand over the office of the president to Adama Barrow, who beat him in the December election. The AU issued the statement after a meeting in Addis Ababa.
The Peace and Security Council also warned in the statement of “serious consequences in the event that his action causes any crisis that could lead to political disorder, humanitarian and human rights disaster, including loss of innocent lives and destruction of properties.”
President-elect Adama Barrow left Gambia on January 15 for neighboring Senegal after West African leaders failed to persuade Jammeh to step aside.Jammeh conceded defeat initially but later changed his mind.
Barrow’s inauguration is supposed to be on January 19, however Jammeh is looking to block the inauguration pending a ruling from Gambia’s supreme court on his legal challenge to the election results.
