Bashir Quits AU Summit Early on Calls for His Arrest

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

Following calls from numerous human rights groups and international organizations to arrest Sudan’s president Omar Bashir during his visit to Nigeria for an African Union (AU) summit; Bashir left the country and flew back to Sudan.

Human and civil rights activists filed a lawsuit against Bashir over an indictment for genocide and war crimes in the Darfur region, and they called on Nigeria to enforce the order; however, the AU determined in 2009 that member nations would not enforce the order.

Bashir left Nigeria just one day into the summit.

“He belongs in custody,” the BBC quoted Elise Keppler of Human Rights Watch as saying about Bashir’s visit to Nigeria.
