Benghazi Sees Heavy Fighting

Wednesday, November 5, 2014

Heavy fighting around the port city of Benghazi left 13 people dead on November 3. The fighting, which included the use of aircraft and tanks, saw a Libyan navy ship struck while in port.

This most recent battle is just one small part of the conflict taking place across Libya as different contingents and the government battle it out for a greater power and oil revenues. The most current offensive launched by the Libyan government in Benghazi started two weeks ago and according to reports at least 240 people have died since the offensive began.

The battle was part of a wider conflict in the North African state where former rebels who helped oust dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 are fighting for power and a share of Libya’s large oil revenues.

According to a Reuters reporter, smoke could be seen rising from the port and warplanes could be heard firing into the port area. Libya has closed Benghazi’s commercial port due to clashes a port official said on Tuesday.
