Berbers Boycott Constitution Committee

Friday, November 15, 2013

Libya’s Berber community, which has been protesting for more participation in the government, has said it will boycott the committee to draft a new national constitution. Currently the Berber or Amazigh minority’s protests have halted gas exports to Italy. The group is also occupying the Mellitah port, which has led to a partial shut-in of oil exports. The closure of the Mellitah complex is hindering Libya’s oil production recovery.

While the government has been trying to negotiate with the Berbers in an attempt to get oil and gas flowing again, not much progress has been made.

More than 660 candidates registered for the committee election according to a Reuters report. There are no Amazigh candidates on the list despite government attempts to negotiate, the High National Election Commission head, Nuri al-Abbar, told Reuters.

Abbar said he would keep open the list for the Berbers open “a day or two” before preparing for the vote. “At the end we cannot wait any longer,” he said. “We need dialogue. We need a solution.”
