BG and Ophir Have More Gas than Expected

Monday, March 24, 2014

The appraisal program undertaken by BG Group and Ophir Energy offshore Tanzania has significantly derisked the planned two train LNG facility. Ophir said the partners have discovered more gas than expected, enough to expand the LNG facility if need be.

The most recent exploration and appraisal program on Blocks 1, 3, and 4 included two exploration discoveries, Ngisi  on Block 4 and the Mkizi  on Block 1, as well as three drill stem tests (DSTs). The DSTs confirmed good reservoir deliverability and flow rates at the upper end of the expected range and significantly derisked the two train LNG project which is moving into the pre-development planning phase.

The LNG facility is being developed in partnership with two other firms who have seen good success in their drilling program in Tanzania, ExxonMobil and Statoil. The LNG export terminal is expected to see the FID made in 2016 and first gas shipments should start around 2020.
