Biya Presidential Win No Surprise

Tuesday, October 23, 2018

Results are in on Cameroon’s presidential election and it will come as a surprise to no one that the incumbent, Paul Biya, was the winner. Biya won the election with 71% of the vote according to the country’s Constitutional Council.

This most recent win by Biya extends his already 36-year rule of the country and makes him one of the longest-standing rulers. He will see another six years in office, making him one of the oldest rulers on the continent at age 85. Biya will be 92 when his seventh term in office ends.

The election was held on October 7, however the Constitutional Council only reported the results on October 22 as it waded through a host of claims of fraud. A number of Biya’s opposition claimed that the election was tainted by fraud, including ballot stuffing and voter intimidation. The Constitutional Council rejected all 18 petitions claiming fraud.

Cameroonian authorities maintain that the election process was credible saying “The election was free, fair and credible in spite of the security challenges in the English-speaking regions.”
