Bombs over Egypt

Thursday, February 5, 2015

Continuing the series of bombings over Egypt, three bombs were found in Cairo; two bombs were safely defused at Cairo Airport while the third one exploded at the capital’s center, fortunately with no injuries or causalities.

A police officer found the first device outside an arrival hall, which led officials to search the airport for other devices. The second bomb was found next to a police car and was programmed to be activated by a cell phone call. Moreover, in a shopping street in downtown Cairo the third bomb exploded damaging some storefronts but causing no injuries.

A few hours after these devices were discovered, a man was killed in a bomb blast in Alexandria, security sources said. The bombs in Alexandria and Cairo are part of a recent spike in small bombs being planted around Egypt. Many of the devices were flash-bang grenades, designed to create panic but cause minimal damage or death.

Larger and deadlier bombs have been targeted almost exclusively at members of the Egyptian police and army.

Egyptian troops fired warning shots over the border frontier into Gaza on Tuesday after a bomb exploded in Gaza territory near an Egyptian army convoy.

The government has accused Hamas of funneling weapons and fighters to the Sinai-based militants, and last week an Egyptian court declared the military wing of the group a terrorist organization. Authorities have accused Hamas of conspiring with Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, which has been declared a terrorist group since violent protests and attacks following the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013. Both groups deny the allegations.
