Following the mortar attack on the Krechba gas plant, a satellite of the In Salah gas facility, BP and Statoil decided to withdraw their staff from the In Salah and In Amenas facilities.
While the mortar attack caused no casualties or damage, the removal of employees is seen as precautionary in light of the 2013 attack on the In Amenas that left scores dead.
“BP has decided to undertake a phased temporary relocation of all its staff from the In Salah Gas and In Amenas JVs in Algeria over the next two weeks. This decision has been taken as a precautionary measure,” BP said in a statement. Statoil will also remove its staff from the two facilities as well as from its operations center at Hassi Messaoud.
