Buhari Appointments Stir Controversy

Sunday, August 30, 2015

Since Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari took office, he has pushed his agenda forward at a rapid pace in an effort to battle corruption and stimulate and diversify the oil-based economy, he has ruffled a number of political and corporate feathers, as well as enraged members of the general public.

Most of the outrage stems from appointments to his administration as a disproportionate number are northerners, which is in violation of federal law. As of late August, only one southerner in a non-critical position had been named. In addition, women are notably absent from the Buhari administration, in stark contrast to former president Goodluck Jonathan who had a number of qualified women serving under him.

A lack of plurality in Buhari’s government with southerners and women marginalized threatens to undermine his presidency and spark protests if not resolved soon.
