The names of Nigeria’s new cabinet have been submitted to the country’s national assembly; a name missing from the list submitted was an oil minister. Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari plans to take personal charge of the country’s crucial oil portfolio.
The names of the nominees were not released and it is not expected to be released until the assembly reconvenes on October 5.
Buhari revealed last week that he would appoint himself minister of petroleum resources and have a junior minister to oversee the day-to-day running of the sector. Since taking office the president has been on a tear trying to right the historically crooked industry that provides the government with the majority of its revenues.
Buhari is no stranger to the oil sector in Nigeria having been the oil minister in 1977 under General Olusegun Obasanjo and later he was in charge of the Petroleum Trust Fund under General Sani Abacha. However, despite his experience, if he fails to show progress he will not have any one to place the blame on but himself.
