Burkina Faso Elects New President in Peaceful Election

Wednesday, December 2, 2015

Burkina Faso saw its first democratically elected president in over three decades, ending a very tumultuous time for the country. After deposing its former leader, Blaise Compaore, and the holding off of a military coup, the country elected Roch Marc Christian Kabore as its new president.

The country’s Independent National Electoral Commission said Kabore won 53.5% of the ballot to secure a first-round victory and become only the second civilian to lead the nation since its independence in 1960. Kabore’s victory also brought to an end a one-man rule for the country.

Kabore won his way into office with the promise of fighting youth unemployment, the improvement of education, and the modernization of the health system. Kabore was prime minister and speaker of parliament under Compaore, but the two fell out when the latter proposed a constitutional amendment to allow him to extend his tenure.
