Burkina Faso Hostage Situation Ends

The capital of Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou, is the site of a hostage situation in Africa. According to reports out of the country hostages were taken amid an attack at the Splendid Hotel on late on January 15.

The attackers, who are thought to be al Qaeda fighters, killed more than 20 people in their assault of the hotel.

Gunmen stormed the hotel and burning cars outside before the military surrounded the building following the reports of gunfire and explosions. The hostage situation moved into the next day after which security forces retook a hotel.

Visiting the hotel after it had been liberated by security forces Burkina Faso’s president, Roch Marc Christian Kabore, said “The situation we’re experiencing since yesterday in Burkina Faso is unprecedented. These are vile, cowardly acts and the victims are innocent people.”

“We call upon the Burkinabe people to be vigilant and courageous because we must include terrorist acts as an integral part of our daily struggle,” he continued.

According to a Reuters report, authorities in the country said around 33 people had been injured and that four assailants were killed when security forces freed over 120 hostages.
