Chinese firm CNPC has been fined $1.2 billion by the Chadian government for environmental violations. The fine comes after the government suspended the firm’s activities in August 2013 for violating environmental standards while drilling for oil in the south. The government also ordered an audit of exploration activities in the country at the time.
“Following the non-respect of its obligations and repeated violations of environmental norms … the government is demanding that CNPCIC (CNPC International Chad) … pay a fine of $1.2 billion,” a statement signed by Chad’s environment minister Mahamat Issa Halikimi said.
Besides the hefty fine, CNPC has been charged by the government to undertake steps to repair all damage and future damage caused through pollution in the Bongor Basin.
