Chad’s President Calls for Boko Haram Leader to Surrender or Face Death

Friday, March 6, 2015

At least one leader in the group of nations that has been suffering from attacks from Nigeria’s Boko Haram Islamist militant group, has had the chutzpah to call out the group’s leader. Chad’s President Idriss Deby of Chad called on Boko Haram leader Abubaker Shekau to surrender himself or die.

As part of a cross-border military task force, Chad’s army has had some success in retaking territory from the militants.

According to Deby speaking at a news conference, authorities know where Shekau is. “‎Abubakar Shekau must surrender. We know where he is. If he doesn’t give himself up he will suffer the same fate as his compatriots,” Deby said.

“He was in Dikwa two days ago. He managed to get away but we know where he is. It’s in his interests to surrender,” Deby said. Dikwa, once held by Boko Haram, was retaken by Chad earlier in the week.

Leadership in Nigeria has been quiet as usual on the subject of Boko Haram and Deby’s remarks, possibly because the Nigerian military has already “killed” Shekau three times, only to have him resurface.
