Militants attacked Chevron’s Okan offshore facility in Nigeria’s Niger Delta on May 4. The platform is located off Escravos. The company said that the facility was “breached” by unknown persons.
The Okan has been operated by Chevron since 1963.
The attack on the facility caused some damage and although Chevron did not specify the extent of that damage it did say that production is currently shut in while the situation is being assessed. The size of the spill resulting from the attack was not revealed but Chevron did day the attack has affected around 35,000 bpd of its net crude production.
The Nigerian Navy deployed additional vessels to protect other installations in the area of the Okan.
The militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers, claimed responsibility for the attack on the Chevron platform saying on its website: “We want to pass this message to all international oil companies operating in the Niger Delta that the Nigeria Military cant’ protect you facilities [sic]. They should talk to the federal government to meet our demands else more mishaps will befall their installations.”
