The Nigerian city of Nnewi saw a huge explosion at the Inter Corp Oil Ltd. gas plant, a subsidiary of Chicason Group, on Christmas Eve. The explosion destroyed nearby buildings and killed several people.
“Definitely more than two people are dead,” police spokesman Ali Okechukwu was quoted as saying in an AFP report. “It was a huge inferno.”
Okechukwu could not confirm local reports that more than 50 people were killed, saying an investigation was underway. He went on to say that the underground tunnel tank was still burning on that evening but it had been stopped from spreading to other facilities.
