Heavy clashes continue to take place in several parts of the Libyan capital of Tripoli according to a number of security firm reports. AKE, a risk assessment firm, said that the clashes are going on in the districts of Souq al-Juma and Abu Sitta. The company’s man on the ground said the situation could worsen.
AKE’s said in its latest threat assessment that the violence may be linked to an armed confrontation in Souq al-Juma between local militiamen and similar armed fighters from Misrata which took place earlier this week. The standoff followed the detention of a Misratan militiaman at a checkpoint in the area.
Shortly after his release the militiaman reportedly returned to the area with several supporters. A heavy gunfight ensued between the two sides. The senior militiaman was injured in the clashes and died in the hospital on November 7.
On the ground in Tripoli, AKE’s Libya specialist Alan Fraser stated that conditions could worsen. “There is potential for the clashes to spread to other parts of Tripoli. Personnel should stay away from the east of the city and be aware of the risk that the violence could spread elsewhere.”
“There are also reports of heavy fighting around the Radisson hotel.”
