Clashes Surround Libyan Oil Field and Refinery

Tuesday, September 23, 2014

Clashes are taking place between soldiers and police over the past few days that are could shut in Libya’s largest oil field for even longer if equipment is damaged during fighting. Currently the El Sharara oil field is shut in but the fighting could extend the halt of oil flows indefinitely.

The North African country has also seen fighting in the west near one of its refineries, Zawiya refinery. The 120,000 bpd Zawiya refinery was shut in after storage was damaged in fighting between armed groups last week; according to reports that fighting has continued.

Libya has two sets of government vying for control, the official one which has taken up residence in the eastern region of the country and the opposition which is controlling Tripoli. A video emerged recently on social media showing the opposition oil minister giving a speech at the oil ministry in Tripoli. Two oil ministries could potentially paralyze the industry even further as questions of who owns the oil emerge.
