Cobalt Drilling Away in West Africa

Wednesday, July 31, 2013

Cobalt International Energy is in the midst of drilling two wells off the coast of Angola. The first well, the Mavinga#1, was spud on May 3 on Block 21 using the Diamond Ocean Confidence rig. The Mavinga#1 is targeting Angola’s pre-salt reserves.

The second Angola well, the Lontra#1 well, located on Block 20 was spud on May 21. The well is also targeting the country’s pre-salt potential and is being drilled using the new-build Petroserv SSV Catarina.

Results from both of these wells are expected later in H2 2013. Cobalt, as operator, owns a 40% working interest in both the Mavinga #1 and the Lontra #1 wells.

The company is also participating in a pre-salt well off Gabon partnered with operator Total. The Diaman#1 well is located on the Diaba Block and was spud in mid-April. Cobalt said in its Q2 results report and operational update that the well had to be respud due to mechanical problems with the original wellbore. Results are expected in Q3. Cobalt has a 21.25% working interest in the Diaman #1 well.
