Coming Soon to South Africa—Shale Exploration Licenses

Tuesday, January 27, 2015

South Africa is ready to grant exploration licenses to companies who have submitted applications to explore in the Karoo Basin for shale gas. According to reports, the awards could come as early as July.

Some companies who have submitted applications have been waiting years for the government to give them the go ahead. In November Falcon Oil & Gas was notified by the Petroleum Agency of South Africa (PASA) that it would proceed with the processing of its application for a shale gas exploration license. Falcon was granted a Technical Cooperation Permit (TCP) in 2009 covering 7.5 million acres in the southern part of the Karoo Basin.

The government delayed awards of licenses for a number of years so that South Africa could put regulations in place for shale gas exploration.
