The Republic of Congo has expressed an interest in joining the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). The announcement was made via a
communiqué of the Presidency of Denis SassouNguesso, signed by his chief of staff, Florent Ntsiba.
“This imminent accession expresses the will of its Excellency, President Denis SassouNguesso, to position our country as one of the world leaders in oil production,” the
statement read.
According to media reports, Congo has received support from Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, in its bid to join OPEC. Saudi Arabia is the cartel’s largest producing
member.
If successful, Congo will become the seventh African country to integrate the cartel afterNigeria, Angola, Algeria, Libya, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea.
