Sonatrach is not the only state-run firm in Algeria that has been the subject of corruption scandals, the country’s state electric firm is now under the corruption spotlight. According to reports out of Algeria, the former and current heads of Sonelgaz are under investigation for alleged corruption along with 15 others.
This is just the latest in a series of corruption cases involving bribes paid by foreign companies to be the winning bid on Algerian projects.
Energy Minister Youcef Yousfi said that Sonelgaz’s chief executive and his predecessor were being investigated and would be “held responsible.”
