Worldwide, the silent, malicious threat is growing. Every day, hackers attempt to exploit electronic “holes” in a company’s computerized infrastructure and four out of every 10 attempts to hack a critical infrastructure target in the US are directed at oil and gas companies. Yet, many executives and operational management still have systems not fully protected, do not know the source of cyber threats and the volume unleashed daily against companies of all sizes – and have taken virtually no action at all.
Potentially the electronic devastation is almost beyond the imagination. One minute a company is engaged in E&P at multiple well sites, compressor stations, processing facilities and pipeline locations. Suddenly, valves are remotely shut off, shut-downs are overridden, ESD systems are manipulated, explosions are occurring and the company is brought to a complete standstill. This is why it’s a very good idea to explore the hacker threat and develop timely solutions.
